Natural stones like marble can easily last a lifetime if properly maintained. However, being acid-sensitive they can also be dissolved and damaged by substances like vinegar and citrus fruit. Being relatively soft, marble is easily scratched by dust and sand underfoot. In fact, a hotel can develop wear patterns from front door to registration desk in as little as 45 days, if not being properly maintained.
Marble is an easy surface to maintain when cleaned periodically. However, if left unmanaged, wear will set in and create hollows and low points for dirt to collect.
Some tips for cleaning and maintaining your marble:
- Sweep or dust your marble surfaces regularly. This removes loose grime and debris that can be ground underfoot to wear your stone.
- Never use acidic materials on marble and keep such substances away from your marble surfaces. Acidic materials dissolve marble, resulting in micro etches, spill marks, and a generally dull appearance.
- Use only non-acidic based cleaners designed specifically for use on marble. Products that claim to clean and shine should not be used, as they require the application of an oil or wax to impart an artificial shine.
